Dr Giles Edwards

MChem · PhD · FRSC

Dr Giles Edwards brings more than 20 years of experience in mass spectrometry and separation science, combining analytical research, instrument engineering and international training. He is an Anthias consultant, holds a PhD from the University of Manchester and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

His experience includes international mass spectrometry escalation engineering, method development and troubleshooting. He is also Technical Director and Founder Trustee of the Recycling Organisation for Research Opportunities (RORO).

  • Introduction to liquid chromatography and LC-MS; mobile phases, buffers and pumps.
  • Isocratic and gradient elution; LC classification, analytical columns and column care.
  • LC detectors, data analysis and qualitative interpretation.
Day 26 DecemberApplied method development
  • Quantitative analysis, vacuum systems, ionisation, MS theory, calibration and mass analysers.
  • Targeted and non-targeted analysis, ion detection and sample preparation.
  • HPLC method development, column and mobile phase selection, LC optimisation and MS method development.
Day 37 DecemberOptimisation, maintenance & troubleshooting
  • MS optimisation, method performance and a pharmaceutical method development case study.
  • Spectral interpretation, HPLC-to-UHPLC transfer, deconvolution and multidimensional LC.
  • HILIC, ion pairing, size exclusion and ion chromatography; advanced columns, detection and MS.
  • LC, MS and data system maintenance; logical troubleshooting of LC and LC-MS systems.
